They only lighten your hair color if you dye your hair, because they will pull out some of the dye. Or if you have certain minerals in your water that darken your hair, they help remove some of that, and your hair will look lighter. But if you don't dye your hair, and you don't have any weird chemicals in your tap water, then all a clarifying shampoo will do is get rid of gunk build-up from styling products. I heard clarifying shampoos are bad. It strips your perm or hair color out along with your natural oils in your hair. I never use it.
